Deep Sea Fishing

The deep waters around Mauritius are home to many large game fish luring fishermen from around the world. Mauritius is indeed an angler's paradise with such a variety of game fish on offer, including tuna, marlin, wahoo, and sharks. The reefs around the island stop large fish from coming close to the beaches and so it is necessary to travel out beyond the reef to enjoy angling.

The prime season for marlin is from November to April when the water is warmest, while tuna arrive from March to April but can be caught all year round. Wahoo are very fast running fish and move into Mauritian waters at the beginning of September. Other fish that can be caught in Mauritius include sailfish, bonito, and different species of shark.

The best fishing occurs off the west coast with boats going out from the Grand Riviere Noire and Flic en Flac, and in the north from Grand Baie and Trou Aux Biches. La Pirogue, in the west, organizes the Marlin World Cup in December, and is the destination of choice for many deep sea anglers. Most hotels have their own boats, or can organize an excursion with private operators.

It is necessary to plan and book in advance as a boat needs to be chartered for your deep sea fishing excursion. Your hotel will be able to help organize any necessary transport and connect you to an operator if they do not have the facilities at the hotel.
