Beaches

Most of the hotels and resorts in Mauritius are located directly on beautiful stretches of beach or sandy coves. Those that are not located on the beach, are more than likely within easy walking distance. Although beaches are not private as such, the areas directly in front of the hotels are generally reserved for the use of hotel guests with sun loungers and thatched beach umbrellas. Most resorts offer a beach bar and towel service.

The three beaches considered to be the most beautiful and popular for their long sandy stretches are Belle Mare beach in the east, Flic en Flac in the west and Trou aux Biches in the north-west. Due to the island being surrounded by a coral reef, some beaches have washed up coral on the shore and beach shoes may be necessary.

Belle Mare Beach

One of the most popular beaches in Mauritius, Belle Mare is known for its long white, sandy beach and deep lagoon. The beach is situated on the eastern coast and stretches over 10 kilometers with the hotels of One&Only Le St Geran, Constance Belle Mare Plage and Constance Le Prince Maurice, Veranda Palmar Beach, and LUX* Belle Mare in close proximity. Many water sports are possible off the beach and in the lagoon including snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, and sailing.

Flic en Flac

The beach of Flic en Flac has long, white beaches and a beautiful blue, lagoon. Situated on the west coast, near to Port Louis, the beach is close to major hotels including Pearle Beach Resort & Spa, La Pirogue, Sugar Beach, Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa, and the The Sands Resort & Spa. Flic en Flac is protected by a reef making the lagoon calm and ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Trou-aux-Biches Beach

This beach is great for families with water that is not too deep, allowing children to play safely in the ocean. Situated in the north of Mauritius the beach is near to Trou aux Biches. The beach is perfect for watching the sunset from the white, sandy beach or enjoy the marine life in the blue water.

Grand Baie Beach

A popular beach on the island, Grand Baie has a variety of attractions including the many water sports on offer, night life and restaurants, and the markets and shops. The beach is situated in the north of the island and only 20 kilometres from Port Louis and close to the hotels of Le Mauricia, Royal Palm, and Le Canonnier. The beach has soft sand and beautiful blue water and is great for those looking to enjoy swimming, windsurfing, sailing and water skiing.

Grand Baie used to be a fishing village and many of the fishermen still use the bay to moor their boats. This just adds to the picturesque area with its palm tree-lined beaches.

Ile aux Cerfs Beach

Situated a 30 minute boat trip from Pointe Maurice, Ile aux Cerfs is a small island off the east coast of Mauritius. The island is home to the famous Le Touessrok Golf Course, and has several restaurants on the island. The sand is beautiful and white and the water is turquoise blue. Ile aux Cerfs is a true island paradise, and a must-see for visitors to the island. Hotels near to the island include Le Touessrok and Tropical Attitude.

Blue Bay Beach

This well maintained beach is popular on the weekends, and features long white beaches and clear blue waters. Situated on the south-east coast near Mahebourg, Blue Bay is protected by an offshore reef making the area perfect for snorkelers and swimmers. Nearby hotel include Preskil Beach Resort and Shandrani.

Cap Malheureux Beach

A small fishing village in the north of Mauritius, Cap Malheureux's bay is the mooring point for many small boats. The beach has some rocky areas and is the perfect place to go snorkeling. The area has beautiful views of the islands of Ile Plate, Ile Ronde and Coin De Mire with the hotels of Coin de Mire Hotel, LUX* Grand Gaube, Veranda Paul & Virginie. With its name meaning 'unhappy Cape' after the many ships that sunk in its coral, Cap Malheureux is the ideal spot for those wanting to go wreck diving.

Mont Choisy Beach

A beautiful soft, white sandy beach with turquoise blue water, Mont Choisy is very popular with both locals and visitors to the island. Casuarinas trees line the beach giving shade from the afternoon sun. The beach stretches for three kilometers and the calm waters in the lagoon are good for swimming and snorkeling.

Pereybere Beach

Situated in the north of Mauritius, the beach is nearby to Merville Beach. This long beach is known as the fun beach on the island with soccer games on the beach and kite boarding and swimming happening in the ocean. The clear water is deeper than most beaches on the island, and is therefore great for those looking to snorkel. The beach can quite busy on weekends and during school holidays, so make sure to arrive early to get a good spot.

Tamarin Bay

This beautiful bay is very popular with local surfers as the surrounding coral reef forces large waves to roll in almost year round. Situated on the west coast, at the mouth of the Tamarin River, the beach is partially private with a resort on one end of the beach. The beach has fine sand and is more laidback than certain beaches in Mauritius.
