Mauritius' volcanic landscape creates many breath-taking hikes into the island's forested mountains. The hikes do not require specific climbing skills and an average fitness level is needed to be able to hike most trails. Taking a small picnic is a great way to enjoy the beautiful Mauritian landscape.
The most popular hikes on the island are in the Black River Gorges National Park situated in the Central Plateau. This thick forested area is a wildlife sanctuary and is home to over 300 flowering plant species, and many different animal species including the famous pink pigeon. Other good hikes exist just north of Mahebourg on Lion Mountain, and guided hikes are run out of the Grand Baie area.
Hikes and transport to trails can be arranged by your hotel, while self-exploration is also a great way to explore what the island has to offer.
